Craven Arms, Shropshire
Historic building restoration in Shropshire
Staves Stonemasonry is a family-run firm of conservation stonemasons based in Craven Arms, in the heart of South Shropshire. We restore and repair churches, chapels, listed buildings, country houses and estate buildings across the county, using traditional stonemasonry techniques and lime mortars that suit the building.
Alex Staves trained in banker masonry at Bath College and founded Staves Stonemasonry in 2020. Every repair is cut, carved and dressed by hand in our Shropshire workshop, so new stone matches the profiles, tooling and finish of the old.

What we do on Shropshire's historic buildings
- Church and chapel conservation: stone repairs, window surrounds, coping, floors and fonts for parishes across Shropshire.
- Listed building restoration: sympathetic repairs to Grade I and Grade II listed houses, halls and farm buildings, keeping as much original fabric as possible.
- Lime re-pointing and rebuilding: mortar samples taken so new lime mortar matches the old and lets the building breathe.
- Architectural masonry: hand-carved window sills, mullions, string courses, tracery, coping and plinths made in our workshop to match the original.
- Estate work: boundary walls, gate piers, lodges and garden features for country estates.
- 24hr emergency call out: storm, flood and accident damage to historic masonry made safe.
Shropshire's buildings use a wide range of local stone, from Grinshill sandstone in the north to the limestones of Wenlock Edge and the stone of the Clee Hills. We match new stone by type, colour and bed so repairs sit quietly alongside the old.
